How you communicate
There's more on offer than stand-alone writing or editing. I can also use my experience to assess the effectiveness of your communications, helping you develop more powerful messages, whatever your field of practice.
For example, I can:
- help draw out and develop key messages - your 'unique selling points' - before translating these into sales literature or web copy
- create a written house style for your staff and writers to use, perhaps to work alongside a new corporate image
- assess the way that heritage and countryside sites are interpreted for the visiting public, including looking at standing interpretation, tour guiding, visitor centres and literature
- work closely with closely with designers to develop visual and written content alongside each other, for maximum impact.
"Eleanor's work is of a consistently high standard. She handled what was a complex project with great professionalism." Christine Warwick, for the Thomson Foundation.
I have developed house style guides for several organisations, including the Royal Shakespeare Company (sample pages document 38KB) and Oxford Brookes University. To present a professional image, a style guide can help staff and freelancers to write with clarity, consistency and coherence.
Sometimes it takes something different to bring the right message to the right audience. The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority needed to tell their visitors about the wildlife and the park in a new way, and commissioned me to write a puppet show to be performed in schools and to visitors on the beach. I developed the story and characters following discussions with staff and park rangers to draw out key messages on access, environmental impact and wildlife. Imparting enjoyment and a sense of wonder were also important for the show (sample pages script 44KB).
Visual, written and verbal interpretation of countryside and heritage sites can make or break a visitor's experience. I have been involved in audits of display boards, visitor centres, guided tours and theatrical performances, providing recommendations for change at sites around the UK including Forestry Commission Aberdeenshire, National Trust properties and the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
